Swami Ramdev, also known among followers as Baba Ramdev is one of India’s most revered spiritual gurus, who has also become an icon for millions across the country as a result of his simple lifestyle and high moral values. He heads a fast-growing consumer goods empire that includes food products like noodles, biscuits, juices, etc., personal care products such as herbal shampoos & soaps; ayurvedic medicines; home care products such as cleaners; health supplements like wheatgrass tablets; and cow milk.

Early Life:

Born in 1965 in a small village in Haryana, Baba Ramdev was always interested in spirituality and the health of the body and mind. When he was just eighteen, he met Swami Shankar Dev, who taught him about Yoga and its many benefits. Baba Ramdev began to practice Yoga every day and soon realized that he had a natural talent for it.

In 1994, Baba Ramdev founded Patanjali Ayurved Ltd., with the goal of promoting traditional Indian medicine and Yoga. The company has since become very successful, with products that are now sold all over India.


Baba Ramdev did his schooling at `Dashashwamedh Primary School` & completed his college education at Garhwal University situated near Haridwar. He also holds a Ph.D. degree in Yoga philosophy from this institution.

In 2015, he also ventured into the education sector known as Patanjali University. He aims to provide holistic learning in Yoga, Ayurveda & other related areas of Vedic wisdom with the vision of making India a modern-day “Vishwaguru” (Universal Teacher). Baba Ramdev has several million followers across India who see him as their guide and mentor.

Carrier and Other Activities:

For over 30 years, Baba Ramdev has been practicing Yoga & Pranayam (breathing exercises)to keep fit, healthy & active. He is also known for leading a very simple life devoid of all extravagance. His followers see in him the qualities needed to make India the world leader it deserves to be.

Baba Ramdev has dedicated his life to teaching Yoga and promoting its many benefits. He is a powerful advocate for Yoga and believes that it can cure any disease. He also runs approximately two dozen Allopathy medical centers across India under the brand name ‘Patanjali Yog Peeth’. Patanjali Ayurved Ltd., a company that was created by him, generates revenues between US$450 million and- 550 million per year depending on market conditions.

Business Investments:

Baba Ramdev is the founder of Patanjali Ayurved Limited, an FMCG company. He has been conferred the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards by the Government of India for his contribution to Indian business and society at large. Baba Ramdev is an Indian entrepreneur best known for his `swadeshi` brand Patanjali. He has set up several medical institutions like ‘Patanjali Yog Peeth’ (to promote Ayurvedic medicine), schools & educational institutes, and many other social initiatives to support India’s rural population.

He has also ventured into manufacturing Indian apparel using indigenous textiles techniques like loom etc., to support small cottage industry units engaged in garment making. Today, his ‘swadeshi’ clothing line enjoys a large market among Indian consumers.


Baba Ramdev is married to `Shree Divya` who helps him run several of his social & business initiatives. He has two children, namely, sons named ‘Yogeshwar’ (Sanskrit for Yogi) and ‘Avesh’ (Sanskrit for fire).

Awards and Recognitions:

For his contribution to Indian business and society at large, Baba Ramdev has been conferred with the Padma Shri award by the Government of India in 2011 followed by the Padma Bhushan award bestowed upon him in 2016.

In 2005, Baba Ramdev was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors. In 2011, he was also awarded the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award for his work in promoting peace and communal harmony.
