Bhakti yoga is a form of devotional mantra meditation. Some people do not perform yoga only for mind and body health, but they also perform it for soul health. Let us understand what is Bhakti yoga and why performing it is beneficial.
What Is Bhakti Yoga?
Bhakti yoga helps to give your practice a unique dimension. It is the yoga of devotion that helps you stay aware of the modern world and yet positive. The Sanskrit word ‘bhakti’ means to adore or worship God. It is also a path to self-realization. It helps you develop a personal relationship with God. In this path, one learns to surrender one’s thoughts, concentrations and emotions on the Divine. There are many events and festivals conducted across America and other countries for Bhakti yoga. It is like a celebration with devotional music.
Today, many western yogis do not necessarily worship any particular Hindu ‘God’ or ‘Deity’. They believe in worshipping the Divine being, the Beloved, the Spirit or the Supreme Source. Everyone can have a different notion of their God and they can worship them. Initially, Americans looked upon yoga only as a fitness exercise. But now, they realize its importance in love and devotion too.
How To Perform Bhakti Yoga?
Bhakti yoga is one of the six systems of yoga. The others are hatha yoga, jnana yoga, karma yoga, kriya yoga, and raja yoga. The practitioners of this form are known as bhaktas or loving devotes. They express their devotion through religious hymns, chants, kirtans or songs. The main purpose of this is to develop feelings of unconditional love for the Divine. According to what is explained in Bhagavat Purana, this is practiced in the following ways:
- Hearing stories about God, chanting the names and listening to ancient holy scriptures.
- Glorifying and praising God
- Reflecting on the ideologies and views expressed by God and listening to the traits of God.
- Performing physical services for the needy in the name of God.
- Worshipping God
- Praying to the Divine
- Preaching those who want information about God
- Creating an inter-personal relationship with God
- Surrendering your life, sorrows, actions, and thoughts to God.
The bhaktas generally devoted their entire life to this practice. Their ultimate goal is to achieve pure love from God.
How Can It Transform Your Life?
Bhakti yoga is the process of spiritual purification. As you get more involved with it, you find your health improving, your mind in better calm and peace and your heart also cleansed. You will find all your hardness go away as you get more inclined towards the path of devotion. This path also requires you to perform self-less tasks such as helping the poor and needy. As you do such tasks, you will find a great sense of contentment and satisfaction in your soul. You also become very tolerant and compassionate in the journey.
This practice does not require you to worship any particular God. It just encourages you to surrender all your tensions and worries to the Supreme Creator. This thought process makes you a happier soul.
