The field of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (also known as TheraCAM) has become very competitive. Many traditional massage therapy and bodywork modalities are quickly outpacing conventional methods, while new modalities like TheraCAM are providing clients with a higher level of safety and a more customized treatment experience. This, in turn, provides clients with more choices in finding the best care.

Yoga Therapy Is The Conscious Application

Yoga Therapy is the conscious application of yoga movements to address health and wellness issues, and it can be used to correct physical or emotional problems. Yoga can be broadly defined as a set of meditative practices based on the Hindu principle of Asana, Vinyasa, and Purna. In the United States, Yoga has become increasingly popular for its reputation as an effective stress-relieving exercise regimen. A TheraCAM Yoga therapist is trained to administer instruction in a therapeutic yoga style using guided meditation and controlled breathing techniques to achieve deep relaxation. The goal of a TheraCAM Yoga session is to allow clients to achieve deep relaxation. Classes typically last up to one hour, but can be shorter or longer depending on the needs of the students.

There are several different levels of TheraCAM Yoga training. At the lowest level, called the Foundation Training Program, there is no training at all. Students learn the basic yoga therapy concepts and are sent home with a checklist of instruction and resources to guide them in their own practice. Students then progress through the levels, which include Level I, II, III, IV, and VI. The first level of certification is not a requirement to begin practicing yoga therapy, but it is helpful to know that at the higher levels, students will have more technical skills and greater understanding of the concepts behind the techniques.

At level I, the student is prepared to work directly with a client. Some classes are offered over the phone or over the internet, but many classes are offered in a single location, such as a clinic. Some of the skills learned during level I therapy include learning about anatomy and physiology, as well as basic assessment and therapeutic techniques. Depending on the practitioner’s experience, he or she may need additional training or be able to perform other functions, such as interpreting medical charts.

At level II, students complete a specific set of tasks, which includes a study of basic yoga posture, breathing techniques, and meditation. They also learn how to conduct therapeutic sessions. At level III, students learn more advanced therapeutic skills, such as hypnosis and EFT. At level IV, students receive a certificate and become officially certified. Students can take an exam to become certified at level V.
