One of the most popular and practiced forms of Yoga is Hatha Yoga. Hatha stands for strength. Hatha Yoga mainly focuses on balancing the two “Nadis” or channels of energy. Ha stands for the Sun and Tha stands for the moon. So Hatha Yoga is the balancing of these two channels. Therefore, the regular practice of it provides physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

Traditionally it was not just a form of exercise. But it was a way of living life in a particular manner. Initially, the maxims of Hatha Yoga was given by Patanjali Maharishi. Its sutras or maxims were written around 400 AD in Sanskrit. And according to Patanjali, there are eight arms or disciplines of it. Many more scriptures also give reference to Hatha Yoga. But the most reliable one is of Patanjali Maharishi.

Hatha Yoga: Main Disciplines

These disciplines help the practitioner informing some moral rules in life. These rules make life much more meaningful and happier.

Yamas: It includes the moral duties we have toward others. So, properties like truthfulness and generosity are included in this.

Niyamas: This contains the qualities one should have in themselves. Be it self-study and self-discipline or purity of thoughts and satisfaction; all are part of this.

Asanas: The poses or postures of Yoga are called Asanas. Meditation is a necessary part of this form. Therefore, asanas help in building concentration and discipline.

Pranayama: In order to attain a calm state of being, some breathing exercises are performed. These help in making the practitioner self-aware and alert. Furthermore, these can also control the vital forces.

Pratyahara: The practitioner comes out of the worldly distractions. It also gives a sense of internal focus to realize emotions and cravings.

Dharana: It means concentration. This allows the mind to increase its ability to focus on one point.

Dhyana: It means being aware without getting interrupted. The practitioner can experience calmness and self-consciousness, and this is possible only when awareness comes after focusing on one thing.

Samadhi: Attaining Samadhi is equal to getting enlightened, as it means connecting with all the life forms present.

Physical Benefits

Hath Yoga makes the body healthier and elastic. It is perfect for any age group. It is also a remedy for many diseases like diabetes, heart diseases, and even obesity. Habits that negatively affect the body can also be shed. Similarly, it cures stress and insomnia.

Mental Benefits

Mind and bodywork in coordination. It frees the mind from negative thoughts. It encourages the intention to take control of the body. The calmness of the brain is easy to attain by breathing exercises and meditation.
