This fitness-based vinyasa practice focuses on building inner strength, gaining flexibility, better stamina, etc. Unlike other yoga practices, it emphasizes faster and powerful exercises instead of concentrating on chanting and meditation. Power yoga is not restricted to a set of asanas. The teachers here feel free to introduce their sequenced form of poses and let the students synchronize with them.

Types Of Power Yoga

Before performing any yoga, it is always suggested to do Surya namaskar. It regulates body temperature and makes it ready for further exercises. The different types of poses of power yoga are:

  • Squats

Squats involve bending of the lower part of the body in a squatting position. The thigh muscles feel the tension here. Squats tones the thigh muscles. It is a simple exercise that works with proper intake and release of breath.

  • Downward Dog to Half Plank

It is core strengthening pose in which the legs are raised high and bend forward.

  • Downward dog to small dog

Parallel to the pose mentioned above, it comes with a difference that the bends are smaller. This also focuses on your legs and abdominal area.

  • Small Dog to Plank

This exercise aims at weight loss. Along with core muscles, it also strengthens the shoulder muscles.

  • Standing to Leg Raise

The lower body is engaged in this type. It works by inhaling the breath and then rising both the legs towards the ceiling and retaining the pose. This fixes the problematic areas, especially belly fat.

  • Abdominal Churning

In this form clockwise and anticlockwise rotations are made using legs. Breathing needs to be taken care of.it also helps to reduce the belly fat.

  • Markat Asana

This asana helps relieve back pain by stretching back muscles. Power yoga is also known to achieve weight loss.

Don’t Do It If:

  1.  Unfit

One needs to be physically fit to try out the poses and asanas of power yoga. As it is a fast and vigorous practice, unfit people can harm themselves more rather than doing good for their bodies. People having any physical injury should avoid doing this yoga.

  • Pregnant

Pregnant women are not suggested for this form of yoga as it has some poses that can cause difficulty in carrying the pregnancy. There are some gentle prenatal sessions designed especially for pregnant women. 

  • Diseased

Any person suffering from any chronic, hereditary, or severe medical condition like diabetes, arthritis, blood pressure, etc. is also not suggested this form of yoga. The intense workout can demand more from their body, leading to medical risks.

 Difference Between Power Yoga And Vinyasa

Moreover, a lot of people have confusion relating to the difference between these two. Although both the forms are inspired by ashtanga still there is several other factors that make them different. Like:

  • Several poses and their holding duration.

Generally, in this form, the poses are fewer holding for a longer duration, unlike vinyasa in which the number of poses is comparatively more, which allows quick movement.

  • Strength/intensity

It focuses on developing intense energy, whereas vinyasa emphasizes more on flexibility.

  • Breath consciousness

It applies more attention to the body, but vinyasa pays more attention to breathe.
